Our Organization
After the Races is a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization located in Fair Hill NRMA in Maryland. Our mission is driven by our desire to rehabilitate and rehome retiring racehorses and our specialty is truly rehabilitating the whole horse as we prepare it for adoption. This work involves a full veterinary evaluation to better set them up for success physically and mental and emotional rehabilitation as well as we prepare them for adoption. ATR incorporated in January of 2011 and has served more than 1000 retiring racehorses in transition from racehorse to riding horse. Our work is supported by a large network of industry partners, volunteers, donors, and adopters.

ATR believes racehorses have much more to offer to the average horse owner and family than many believe and one of our goals is to educate the community on the versatility and usefulness of the breed beyond racing. We also encourage race owners and connections to have an exit plan in mind for their horses and to prioritize, and invest in, their aftercare. We have formed some truly meaningful relationships with many race owners and syndicates for whom ATR is their first choice when considering placement of their horses.
While you can regularly see us at the Maryland Five Star event in Elkton in October, we are happy to schedule visits or demonstrations with educational groups and clubs in the area upon request. We especially like talking with kids and young people in an effort to cultivate more up and coming horse enthusiasts and professionals. After the Races director Bonnie McRae also serves on advisory boards and committees with local community college, promoting education in equine science and management. McRae also speaks on a variety of topics at conferences across the country about best practices in the aftercare industry as well as difficult, but important, topics like end-of-life planning for equines in transition.

Thank you for visiting us here at AfterTheRaces.org. Please know that this is the only official After the Races website and our farm in Elkton, MD (right across the street from Fair Hill NRMA) is our only location. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to know more about the horses we have available, please visit our Facebook Page or e-mail us.

Thank you,
Bonnie McRae

Who Are We?
After the Races is a 501(c)3 Thoroughbred rehabilitation and rehoming center located in Elkton, Maryland that takes in retiring Thoroughbred racehorses.
We combine the horse’s history from the track with a vetting on the farm so that we can then put together a rehabilitation plan for each individual horse. We also spend time transitioning the horse behaviorally to life beyond racing. As the horse is rehabilitated, we spend time evaluating the horse’s temperament and physical capabilities. When ready, we begin the retraining process for horses in the program and seek to match them up with suitable, long-term homes.

Horses come to After the Races through various backstretch programs, dedicated to finding good homes for horses still on the racetrack. We also receive horses from private owners and trainers who know the importance of finding their horse a safe place to transition as it pursues its next career. Since After the Races’ inception in late 2010, we have found an increasing desire among racing professionals to see their horses get a second chance and we could not be more excited to work with them to realize this dream.
