Description
Cheif Reider is a very cute, 6 year old, bay gelding that came to us in partnership with New Start for Horses based out of Penn National. This guy was a turf horse, which is reflected in his seemingly seasonal racing career of 14 starts. It's common for turf races to be pulled off the turf (run on the dirt track instead) due to weather, and turf racing tends to be seasonal in our part of the country. As a nonwinner of 2 at 6 years of age, he wasn't competitive enough to keep going for another season.
That's a lucky choice for him and for his next home as he retired sound! This guy has some good breeding. He's by Peace and Justice and out of a Divine Park mare. He not only has some well-known stallions in his pedigree, but one absolutely phenomenal mare as a great-great grandson of Toussaud! She's several generations back but we like to give influential mares their due when we can!
Chief received a great evaluation with our vet who noted that while he's a bit crooked up front, he's very sound and should be able to pursue his next career without any limitations. Even just jogging him in hand for his vet evaluation, it was clear to everyone that this guy has some suspension and can move!
Chief is getting a bit of time to let down and put on some weight but is otherwise good to go to someone who enjoys restarting a horse off the track themselves. We have noticed that he does crib and will be seeing if a strap will keep that habit in check. He's otherwise a very nice horse by our early impressions!
