Volunteer With Us
Volunteer
After the Races welcomes volunteers of all levels of experience. From beginners to long-time horse owners, we always have areas in which you can help, and we're also willing to train up beginners to become confident handlers. From day-to-day routines in the barn to assisting at events or in fundraising activities, there are many opportunities you can take part in to help the horses of After the Races.

Hours. ATR has fixed business/operating hours. If you wish to be involved in any of the day to day activities such as grooming, handling, exercising, barn upkeep, etc. you should expect to be at the barn during our working hours. The most common hours for volunteers are between 8AM and Noon. Once established as a volunteer, help may be welcome in the afternoons, especially when covering staff time off, but afternoons are short (often an hour or less). All volunteers, especially first timers, should contact for scheduling.

Volunteering is not the same as visiting. Understand that while we are a fun, generally easy going group of people, we do work hard. If you are going to come volunteer, come prepared to work while enjoying the time at the barn. Tasks can be assigned depending on your comfort level and abilities and we're always happy to teach new skills if you're open to learning!
A note on exercising horses. As all of our horses are recently off the track, it should be assumed that they are green and somewhat unpredictable. Not all volunteers will be approved to ride, and those that are will be assigned horses based on After the Races’ staff’s knowledge of the horse, its tendencies, and the rider’s abilities. All riding is under the supervision of our head trainer and all riders must sign a waiver as well as wear protective gear.
We also do not ride every day or always have horses ready for volunteers to ride.
